Dream Jobs for Adults with ADHD

Posted

When we think about ADHD we tend to reference students in a classroom setting. Where the struggles with classwork, interrupting the teacher, and test taking difficulties are all too familiar.  According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) many kids out grow the impulsiveness, inattentiveness, and hyperactivity, but about 60% of children with ADHD carry it on with them into adulthood.

Adult ADHD is primarily associated with restlessness, disorganization, and the inability to focus. All these symptoms can inhibit someone from getting and keeping a job. Now many adults with ADHD are very successful, and have prosperous professional careers. Sometimes knowing what to look for can become difficult, but not impossible. A list of jobs that are best suited for the future professional with ADHD can be found at Healthline.com.

  1. Police Officers and Firefighters: Everyday is a new in the life of a police officer or firefighter. This can be good for people with ADHD because there is really no mundane routine. Things are constantly changing and far from tedious.
  2. Doctors and Nurses: Adults with ADHD can thrive in high intensity environments like an emergency room or ambulance. Since days as doctors and nurses are constantly changing, the requirements to maintain focus, call up past training, and work with others helps adults with ADHD succeed.
  3. Salespeople: A salesperson is prefect for adults with ADHD who find comfort in talking and interacting with others. One obstacle that comes with becoming a salesperson is that it requires solo work and individual focus.
  4. Artist and Entertainers: The entertainment industry is filled with visionaries, creators, and dreamers. An abundance of energy and drive is needed to be successful with in the industry. This intensity creates a perfect environment for adults with ADHD to thrive.
  5. Members of the Military: Adults with ADHD who enjoy physical work can find fulfillment in the armed forces. The intensity, physical demand, and clear objectives with in the military make it a place where many adults with ADHD can become successful, even though a key fundamental aspect of the military is based on discipline and order.
  6. Entrepreneurs: If following orders and disciple are key struggles, become your own boss. As an entrepreneur, adults with ADHD can use their energy and determination to run their own businesses.
