We’ve got some insider news for you. A growing trend of therapy now exists, renowned for its effectiveness, that doesn’t call for changes or additions to your medication regime. This new type of therapy reduces stress during and long after its practice. It increases heart rate, blood flow and tolerance for pain all while instigating biochemical changes that help increase relaxation in the body. As amazing as it sounds, it’s actually something most people do almost every day. It’s called laughter.

Humor therapy is defined as the use of humor for the relief of physical or emotional pain or stress. The physiological and psychological benefits provided by humor therapy are seemingly unrivaled by most other types of therapy interventions. Research shows that laughter shuts down the flow of stress hormones in the body while also releasing endorphins, or “feel good” chemicals, in the brain. It decreases interpersonal tension and is believed to strengthen human connection and ignite interpersonal bonding between people.

Humor serves to help mental health clients realize and learn that they possess the ability to control their emotions. Therapeutic groups are being utilized to teach clients how to laugh for no reason at all, as well as to see the humor in life itself. Laughter is an instant meditation that allows for momentary escapes from daily life. Talk to your doctor, counselor or support team about incorporating humor therapy into your treatment.
