Mental illnesses and disabilities can be a difficult subject in the workplace. But a recent Employment Issues Symposium, held in Nashville, Tennessee, stressed the importance of treating mental health the same as physicial health when the topic of work performance and disability arises.

HR Daily Advisor offers some insights into how to approach employees suffering from a mental illness or other disability. Above all, they stress to managers not to call anyone “crazy,” but to rather, work through the problem and look for ways to assist employees who need help.

Experts increasingly acknowledge that work is a key factor in supporting mental wellness. So, for those who have suffered from mental illness, meaningful employment is an essential part of the recovery process. Remember that, while employers have the right to a productive employee, employees have the the right to work in a safe environment, free from discrimination and harassment.

The Villa Orlando and Pasadena Villa’s Smoky Mountain Lodge are adult intensive psychiatric residential treatment centers for clients with serious mental illnesses. We also provide other individualized therapy programs, step-down residential programs, and less intensive mental health services, such as Community Residential Homes, Supportive Housing, Day Treatment Programs and Life Skills training. Pasadena Villa’s Outpatient Center in Raleigh, North Carolina offers partial hospitalization (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (PHP). If you or someone you know may need mental health services, please complete our contact form or call us at 407-574-5190 for more information.
