Marnita Patton, MA, ATR, CCBT, CGT, CDP, Art Therapist at Pasadena Villa Orlando, led residents on an Art Adventure involving a Zentangle Class held at the Casselberry Art House where gorgeous pieces of art were created.  The art of Zentangle is something that we have been sharing and teaching in the Open Art Studio and during individual therapy sessions. The method of Zentangle is trade marked by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. During our class the instructor told us that, “doodling is to Zen, as stretching is to Yoga.”  In fact, Rick Roberts actually used to be a Monk!  At the start of the class we emphasized a needed focus to create while getting to a calm state by becoming grounded with our feet flat on the floor.

The Zentangle method increases creativity and focus. The method also provides an increased sense of comfort. Creating a Zentangle is known as tangling. Individuals from all over the world, of all ages and with different interests can have an enjoyable time tangling.  The heart of the Zentangle Method is eliminating any recognizable objects or scenes. This in turn, eliminates the associated “thought” that goes with them. The object of tangling is to become totally focused on each stroke of the abstract patterns you make, until the tangle grows organically into an unexpected and surprising end result. This process deliberately short-circuits the restless mind and facilitates a pleasurable calm which is beneficial to our residents working on the management of anxiety, stress and depression. This calm artistic activity has been so successful and favored by the residents, that we are not only planning to attend an advanced Zentangle class, we may be also incorporating some tangling time into daily schedules!

Pasadena Villa programs set out to create a comforting and therapeutic environment. We do things a normal family would do. Our staff and residents learn and model appropriate social and communication skills, from daily mealtimes, to many fun and relaxing arts and crafting activities.

Our mental health professionals work directly with residents. They observe them in actual social situations and incorporate these observations directly into the resident’s ongoing treatment plan.  This individual real life personalized attention makes the Pasadena Villa treatment experience more appropriate, relevant and beneficial for each of our residents, especially when compared to any other available adult residential treatment mental health services.

The Villa Orlando and Pasadena Villa’s Smoky Mountain Lodge are adult intensive psychiatric residential treatment centers for clients with serious mental illnesses. We also provide other individualized therapy programs, step-down residential programs, and less intensive mental health services, such as Community Residential Homes, Supportive Housing, Day Treatment Programs and Life Skills training. Pasadena Villa’s Outpatient Center in Raleigh, North Carolina offers partial hospitalization (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (PHP). If you or someone you know may need mental health services, please complete our contact form or call us at 407-574-5190 for more information.
