It’s a Matter of Perspective
One thing that can be especially hard to understand in regards to a mentally ill loved one is that person’s lack of perspective. It can be frustrating to deal with someone who exaggerates what seem to be minor situations and inconveniences. This lack of perspective stems from believing that one’s problems are unique or more difficult than those of others and/or a real or perceived lack of ability to handle these problems.
Pasadena Villa is built on the philosophy that immersion in real life experiences enables residents to prepare themselves to handle daily life and maintain a healthy perspective. As residents move through the Social Integration Model and progressive levels of care, they learn fundamental life skills such as time management, housekeeping, cooking, grocery shopping, budgeting, and money management. These are complemented by social and recreational excursions in the community to build social skills and provide opportunities for real-time feedback and coaching. Ultimately, residents begin planning for life beyond treatment by preparing resumes, registering for school, and practicing interview techniques.
By learning new ways of living and coping, residents are equipped with the knowledge and self-confidence they need to handle most of the hurdles life throws their way. Through practice and positive reinforcement, residents gain a realistic perspective of their lives, illness, and personal situation.
