Dual Diagnosis and treating Co-Occurring Mental Illness and Substance Abuse
Dual diagnosis is a name given to treatments
for people who suffer from co-occurring disorders – mental
illness and substance abuse. Research has strongly indicated that
to recover fully, treatment needs to focus on both, as focusing
on one does not ensure that the other will go away. Roughly 50%
of individuals with severe mental disorders are affected by substance
abuse, and 37% of alcohol abusers and 53% of drug abusers also
have at least one serious mental illness (Journal of the American
Medical Association).
Those who struggle with serious mental illness
and substance abuse face problems of enormous proportions. Often
mental health services are not well prepared to deal with the
addiction issues, and substance abuse services are not well equipped
to treat serious mental illness.
Our social integration model helps individuals
with a dual diagnosis by providing an integrated, comprehensive
approach to both the mental illness and the substance abuse. Included
in our treatment are motivational interventions, whereby through
education, support and counseling, we help empower deeply demoralized
clients to recognize the importance of their goals and their lives,
and assist them with illness self-management. Of course, we help
build positive coping patterns and behavior skills through individual,
group and family therapies. We provide social support, and link
clients to the 12-step recovery community. We view recovery as
a long-term, community based process, and collaborate with other
treatment providers whenever needed to ensure the most comprehensive
and individualized treatment options are utilized.
