Social Integration Therapy

One of the most powerful ways to predict psychological well-being in adults is to look at how socially connected they are to other people. This is, of course, one of the core problems of mental illness: the mentally ill often have very poor social skills and thus are not able to consistently or successfully socialize with others. Because of their socially unacceptable behaviors, and the unpredictability of their behaviors in social settings, most people to not want to be around the mentally ill for any length of time. The consequence of this is often social isolation, especially from family members, and ultimately an inability to participate in our society. Remaining socially integrated is, in our view, a key component of successful living.

Our approach at Pasadena Villa draws strongly from a variety of theories, with a belief that social participation is the key to effectively participating in family, occupational, educational, community and societal life.

Through modeling, active training, repetition, and variable reinforcement schedules, along with cognitive and psychiatric interventions, we develop the maximum potential for social integration in each individual. Social activities with licensed psychotherapists, rather than traditional psychotherapy, form the core intervention.

By targeted individual coaching, we develop increasingly better social skills. With increased social skills and repetition comes decreased social anxiety and increased success at the activities. With increased success comes augmented participation in family life and integration into society, culminating in better social functioning, and perhaps more importantly, an improved sense of dignity and enjoyment of life.

Our unique social integration model allows us to use a wide variety of community activities and settings to enhance our clinical programming. Immersing our residents into the community helps them learn and develop with the social fabric of society, not removed from it.
