Daily Life at TLLC

Educational Career Growth

Transitional Living & Learning Center (TLLC) is a transitional living and life skills development program designed to assist young men and women in reaching their fullest potential. We offer a safe place where clients learn and practice new skills, and apply them in the real world.

The TLLC program is not staffed 24/7; clients live independently in apartments near the center. The TLLC team provides personal coaching and case management, along with a wide variety of skills based activities.

Our goal is to build skills and patterns of successful, healthy living that are transferable to any setting, anywhere.  In doing so, our clients can experience the freedom and confidence to become productive and successful at whatever they wish after leaving our program.

Our Program

Our program philosophy is based on providing the most meaningful, real life learning opportunities possible.

Real Time Learning – Real Life Applications
TLLC provides a skills based program to help clients implement what has already been learned in other programs, as well as new skills learned here.  Each person is individually assessed to work on the skills that are personally needed.  The skills based curriculum is highly individualized, and includes trainings in these areas of living:

  • Social
  • Emotional
  • Educational
  • Vocational
  • Nutrition/Wellness/Fitness
  • Basic Budgeting
  • Independent Living Skills, Cooking, Hygiene, etc.
  • Communication Skills, Coping Skills, Social Skills
  • Accessing Community Resources
  • Leisure Time Management

Clients will be expected to work towards enrolling into a local college (or a program to complete high school) or get a job. We help our clients assess their prior educational experiences, successes and failures, and take steps to make real changes in their lives.

Educational Career Growth

Clients are able to choose from a variety of educational offerings, including: University of Central Florida, Rollins College, Valencia College, Seminole Community College, Winter Park Tech, and Orange County Adult Education Centers. Our team assists with the application process, as well as study skills, linking clients to services on campus and within the community, and helping them navigate the complex educational and social networks of college life.

For those clients who will not be attending school, we offer highly individualized job assistance. We do not provide job placement. Our Team coaches clients through the natural steps along the process of finding meaningful work. We help individuals re-discover what is of interest and/or importance to them. We then assist with developing resumes, completing job applications, researching jobs, learning interviewing skills and techniques, and learning the skills necessary to keep a job once it is obtained.

Social, cultural and recreational activities play a key role in our program. By engaging in fun and stimulating activities, our clients find endless opportunities to learn and grow. During this process, they learn to apply new skills in real life situations. Some of the many activities available for our clients include:

  • Recreational activities: YMCA strength and conditioning, Aiguille Rock Climbing Gym, hiking, biking, golf, tennis, racquetball, canoeing, and more.
  • Cultural Activities: Orlando Science Center, Orlando Museum of Art, History Museum, artistic expression, Kennedy Space Center, festivals, concerts, and plays.
  • Social Activities: Disney theme parks, Universal Studios theme parks, and community recreation leagues.

One of the key components of our program is our unstructured “FREE” time. This time is critical for our team to assess how are clients are actually functioning outside of external structure. Free Time is the natural next step in the process of becoming independent and productive. Unstructured time is when the clients have to apply what they are learning in the areas of meal preparation and cooking, shopping, leisure time, and social opportunities.

We believe the only way to truly create patterns of healthy living is to provide opportunities for our clients to make decisions. Some times they will make healthy and productive decisions, and apply the skills they are learning. At other times, they will make poor decisions; which will provide our team with opportunities for continued teaching.

Those who require more intensive therapeutic services see psychiatrists and therapists within the community, outside of the program.

Our Clients

client

TLLC is for young adults, 18-30, who need help in making the transition into adulthood.

People come to TLLC from a variety of settings, including hospitals, wilderness treatment programs, residential treatment centers, addiction treatment programs, as well as colleges and universities or home.

Clients should be motivated and ready to work upon enrollment in TLLC.  With hands-on assistance from our team, clients start the process of completing high school, getting into college, or finding work immediately.

Clients come with a wide range of independent living skills – we work on skills deficiencies in a highly individualized plan. Some need more attention with cooking, while others need help with basic budgeting and others with personal hygiene. No matter what challenge exists, our team provides a non-judgmental approach to solving the practical issues of daily life.

Through active participation in the group and individual aspects of our program, we learn how to navigate a wide range of relationships (roommates, school mates, co-workers, employers, teachers, customers, family, peers) and social settings.

Many clients have difficulty being compliant and consistent with prescription medications. We work on increasing medication compliance and teaching skills necessary for safe and effective self management of medications.

Some have their own vehicles while in the program. This is encouraged, but determined on an individual basis. Clients without vehicles can be very successful in the program if they are open to learning and using the public transportation systems.
